NDT testing of steam boilers is a statutory requirement every 5 years. Certain areas of the boiler require ultrasonic testing. These areas require exposing as they are generally covered by lagging and cladding and on most steam boilers by a refractory quarl in the furnace.
We undertake non-destructive testing (NDT) preparation to assess and remedy any issues with the boiler prior to the visit of the boiler insurance inspector, who uses measurement techniques to identify any irregularities or damage in materials.
Our NDT preparation services are carried out by a skilled team of technicians who travel with all the equipment needed to carry out the required work. This work includes:
- Initial risk assessment
- Removal of the boiler cladding and lagging to expose the shell and seams.
- Removal of the refractory brickwork and quarl to expose welds in the furnace tube
- Cleaning of the welds and seams
- Accompanying the NDT inspector during the examination, who will use ultrasonic testing to check for laminations in the parent material and to detect extremely small flaws within welded joints
- If any defects are found, we will also quote for repairs or further testing procedures.
- Replacement of cladding and lagging
Our Annual Insurance and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Inspection Preparation Services are delivered to meet guidelines defined in PSSR 2000 – SAFed SBG1 & SGB2.
