As the company reaches its half century, the business is continuing to grow and at our base at Farling Top, Cowling, works are nearing completion on a new purpose-built workshop facility. Constructed on a 5000sq ft plot adjacent to the existing workshop, the new facility is a 2500sq ft steel-framed industrial unit that includes a 20-tonne overhead crane.
Twyford Waterworks in Hampshire is an Edwardian pumping station and a site of considerable engineering significance. As one of the most complete heritage boiler houses still in existence, it uniquely features three Babcock & Wilcox wrought-iron front (WIF) water tube boilers and a 1914 Hathorn Davey triple expansion steam pumping engine. In 2009 the Twyford Waterworks Trust (TWT) embarked on an ambitious project to return one of the boilers to steam.
Graham Feldwick, volunteer Project Director of the TWT says that Identifying a company to carry out the rebuilding of the boiler and associated steam plant was not easy: “It was of utmost importance for this project to select a company that could not only carry out a first-class restoration of the boiler and steam plant, but that could work collaboratively and easily with other companies, contractors, and TWT’s own team of volunteers.”

The heritage steam boiler specialist HA McEwen (Boiler Repairs) Ltd is this month celebrating its 50th anniversary. Established in August 1968, the company operates from its base in Cowling, North Yorkshire, and over the decades has undertaken a vast range of projects from new boiler builds to steam boiler repair and restoration projects on all types of vintage shell, locomotive, traction engine and steam launch boilers.
Working with some of the country’s leading heritage organisations, including the National Railway Museum in York, Beamish Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, McEwen’s longevity is in part down to being able to provide traditional boiler-making skills and techniques that are no longer widely practiced.
There has been an increased number of hotwell tanks were leaving our Farling Top works. Our newly designed tanks couple structural efficiency with the latest in monitoring and control equipment and have proved a popular choice for customers looking at making efficiency improvements to their overall steam systems.
We work throughout the UK and Ireland, carrying out industrial boiler and heritage steam boiler engineering contracts across a wide range of industries, including:
Breweries | Distilleries | Hospitals | The Food Industry | Chemical Plants | Textile Mills | Paper Industries | Government Facilities
